We hope you have a wonderful holiday season here in Arlington, VA.   What is National Cookie Day? “It’s National Cookie Day! Did you know that the English word "cookie" is derived from the Dutch word "koekje," which means little cake? Dutch bakers used to test oven temperatures on small amounts of batter so that they would not waste the entire cake mix if the temperature wasn't right. It was not long before they discovered that these tiny pieces of cooked batter were actually quite tasty!”   Nutella Stuffed Sugar Cookies "Old fashioned soft and chewy sugar cookies stuffed with creamy chocolate and hazelnut Nutella. Trust me, this combination is as delicious as it sounds!" This recipe comes from Homemade Hooplah . To make these cookies you’ll need all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, unsalted butter, sugar, an egg, vanilla extract, and Nutella.   Grinch Cookie Recipe Eat these cookies while watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas . These cookies are tasty and easy to make. This recipe comes from Mom Dot . Gather these ingredients to make them: a vanilla or white cake mix box, cream cheese, butter, an egg, green food dye, and heart sprinkles.   Cake Batter Chocolate Chip Cookies No one will be able to resist these cake batter cookies. This recipe was perfected, making them so soft and chewy. Make them for friends and neighbors to celebrate the holiday season. The recipe comes from Sally’s Baking Addiction . You’ll need these ingredients to make them: all-purpose flour, a yellow or vanilla cake mix, baking soda, salt, unsalted butter, granulated sugar, packed light brown sugar, an egg, vanilla extract, chocolate chips, and sprinkles.   What's your favorite holiday cookie? We want to share some information about the Smithsonian as well as some facts about fossils. We hope you enjoy the blog and get a chance to visit the museum this month and celebrate Fossil Day here in Arlington, VA.   Fossil Facts The word fossil comes from the Latin word fossilis which means “dug up”. Much of what we’ve learned about dinosaurs and other ancient living species have come from what fossils that have been found. Fossils are still teaching us all about history. “Fossils are the remains of ancient animals and plants, the traces or impressions of living things from past geologic ages, or the traces of their activities... Most fossils are excavated from sedimentary rock layers… Eventually, they are compressed into sedimentary rock. The fossil of a bone doesn't have any bone in it.  A fossilized object has the same shape as the original object, but is chemically more like a rock.”   The Smithsonian “The National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) is part of the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s preeminent museum and research complex. The Museum is dedicated to inspiring curiosity, discovery, and learning about the natural world through its unparalleled research, collections, exhibitions, and education outreach programs.”   Visit The Last American Dinosaurs: Discovering a Lost World exhibit where you can see fossils that were found that make up some amazing dinosaurs. Or visit The David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins where you can also see ancient species. This time it’s the species that evolved into humans. You can find all kinds of other great exhibits to visit about animals, science, humans, and more. Visit the museum to learn about some of these amazing topics.
